Ken Calvert hurt women and families in 25 of the 35 votes we track.
Voted against the 2022 gun safety law.
What it means for herShe's 22 and just left a boyfriend who hit her. An abused woman whose abuser has a gun is about 5 times as likely to be killed. Before this 2022 law, a conviction for hitting her barred a husband from having a gun, but not a boyfriend she did not live with. Now it covers boyfriends too. Voted for cutting food stamps by $39 billion.
What it means for herShe's 34, a single mom of two, and works at a grocery store. Her pay is a bit over the usual limit for food stamps, but her state lets her family qualify. In 2013, 44% of SNAP participants were children. This bill would have ended that state option, and her family would have lost its food aid. Source: U.S. Department of Agriculture, 2014
Voted for the 2025 law that cut Medicaid.
What it means for herShe's 24, works part-time in Ohio with no insurance from her job, and hopes to have a baby someday. Medicaid pays for about 4 in 10 U.S. births. Starting in 2027 in most states, she must show 80 hours of work a month. If a slow month or a lost form cuts her off, she loses coverage before she is even pregnant. Source: KFF, 2025
We wrote down which bills and nominations count, and why, before we scored anyone. A vote counts as hurting women and families when it takes away care, coverage, safety or rights, and as helping when it protects them. A missed vote never counts against anyone. Money and court cases are shown, but never change the grade.
